Overview

About marketplace development

A marketplace is a fundamentally harder product than a store. You are building for two sides — buyers and sellers — and the platform succeeds only when both find it worthwhile.

Split payments and compliance

Money flowing to multiple parties introduces real complexity: commission calculation, payout scheduling, tax handling, and in many jurisdictions regulatory obligations around holding funds. We use connected-account models from established providers rather than building money movement ourselves, which would be both risky and heavily regulated.

Vendor experience determines supply

Sellers leave marketplaces that make listing tedious or payouts opaque. Vendor onboarding, bulk listing tools, clear payout reporting, and order management deserve as much design attention as the buyer storefront — arguably more early on, when supply is the constraint.

Trust mechanisms are core infrastructure

Ratings, verification, dispute resolution, and refund policy are what make strangers willing to transact. These are not features to postpone; without them a marketplace does not function.

FAQ

Common questions

How are payments split between vendors?
Through connected-account models such as Stripe Connect, where the provider handles money movement, compliance, and payouts. Building custom money movement would put you into regulated territory that is expensive and risky to occupy.
What is hardest about launching a marketplace?
Supply, almost always. Buyers will not come without inventory, and vendors will not list without buyers. The product work is tractable; solving that cold-start problem is the real challenge, and it is largely a commercial one.
